Heit’s one of the best smart doorbells of 2023. Not only is it affordable, but it can also capture HD video, store images to review later, and it’s a breeze to install, regardless of your current setup. However, if you’re looking to get the most out of your fancy smart doorbell, you’ll want to dive into the accompanying smartphone app and do a few tweaks to its settings. Here are five tips and tricks for your Ring Video Doorbell to improve its performance.
Set your motion zones
The first thing you’ll want to do after installing your Ring Video Doorbell is set up motion zones. These are customizable areas that will trigger an alert if motion is detected, and setting them up correctly will save you the headache of receiving unwanted updates. To customize your motion zones, load up your Ring app and tap the three lines at the top of your screen. From there select Devicesthen browse motion settings a movement zones. You will now be able to add zones and adjust the size of existing zones.
Turn off motion notifications
Motion zones do a great job of reducing unwanted motion alerts, such as when people are walking on the sidewalk outside your home or on the outskirts. However, sometimes you want to turn off motion notification entirely (a useful feature if someone in your family will be going in and out of the front door repeatedly over the course of a few minutes). To disable motion detection or motion alerts, simply open the Ring app, click the three lines at the top of the screen, then head to the Devices menu. Select the device you want to adjust, then change the Motion detection either motion alerts on or off button.
Activate mode setting
Want your Ring Video Doorbell to control your home while you’re away, but turn off completely when you’re home? Consider configuring the mode settings. These allow you to automatically activate certain features at the press of a button instead of navigating through a sea of menus. To enable this functionality, return to the Devices screen and click on the product you want to modify. Then click mode setting. You will then be guided through the activation process. Once enabled, you will have the option to choose from three different modes, each with different functionality and activated with just a tap on the Device menu.
Extend the life of your battery
Unfortunately, there’s no foolproof way to significantly increase the battery life of your Ring Video Doorbell. You can get a little more power by turning off motion detection or moving your Wi-Fi router closer to your front door, but that will only get you so far. You may also consider purchasing a new battery pack if yours is a few years old, as they lose their longevity as they age. And keep in mind that during the winter months, you’ll probably notice a drop in performance: cold weather tends to drain your battery faster than warm weather.
Synchronize with your smart home
Ring Video Doorbell can be combined with several different smart home ecosystems, including Google Home and Alexa. Once paired (check out our guides for Google Home and Alexa), you’ll have access to a number of different features depending on what’s in your home. One of the coolest features is being able to check your front door on your smart display, which gives you a much broader view of your front door than your smartphone.
