Directors Nick Johnson and Will Merrick discuss ‘Disappeared’

When Grace Allen doesn’t return from her vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend Kevin (Ken Leung), time is short. As the feds delay investigating her disappearance, June takes matters into her own social media-savvy hands to find out what really happened to her mother. Time disappeared he accompanies you through many plot twists, his big reveal being that Grace never actually went to Colombia; June’s father, James (Tim Griffin), kidnapped her on the way to the airport.

James was dangerously abusive towards Grace when June was young. So, Grace fled with June to California years earlier, changed her names, and let young June believe her father was dead. As it turned out, James met Kevin while they were both in prison. It was Kevin who helped him orchestrate this whole heist by hiring actors to portray his vacation in Colombia gone wrong. While all eyes and fingers were pointed at Kevin in Colombia, Grace was stuck in a shack on James’s ranch the entire time. After a series of trials and tribulations, June manages to save the day and bring her mother back home.

Mashable got on a quick Zoom with the co-directors of disappearedNick Johnson and Will Merrick, to discuss the subtext of their film.

“There was one [high profile] particular case where it seemed like people on TikTok were profiting from the comments and theories of this case, which we really don’t love,” Johnson shared. “And so we injected that into the film because we saw that happen.” [in real life].”

When Grace’s disappearance hits the news, everything about her case quickly becomes clickbait on the Internet, with TikTokkers and Gen Z True Crime Fans digging into Grace’s past and discovering that she has something to hide. The viewer knows that Grace changed her name to escape her abuser, but the Internet doesn’t and is adamant about turning her into a villain.

In disappeared, true crime content creators do not act with empathy and never stop to wonder what could have prompted Grace to change her name in the first place. Instead, they jump on the dangerous media bandwagon in the rush of it all, jumping to outrageous conclusions.
