antonio aricò + seletti bring the mediterranean to the world

antonio arico elaborates the Magna Graecia collection for Seletti – now on view at house and object — as a family of objects for both exterior and interior. The designer expects the objects to invade terraces, gardens, porches, but also lounges, living rooms and halls. The ubiquitous terracotta material is closely related to the Mediterranean tradition and is typical of southern Italy. With this in mind, Aricò presents the project to bring those warm and sunny environments to the interiors of the whole world.

Terracotta is apparently a very poor material, but magic can be done with it.,’ says Antonio Arico.I am fascinated by its ‘nude’ color and the natural imperfection of its thicknesses, qualities that prompted me to create a family of objects that could speak of craftsmanship and at the same time tell exciting stories through the interpretation of Magna Graecia decorations..’

translating Greek tradition through modern design

The objects in the Magna Graecia collection by Antonio Aricò range from functional objects to decorative objects. Functional pieces include vases with Doric, Greek, or wavy ornamentation that are produced in both free-standing and wall-mounted editions. A jug is sculpted to evoke the familiar stereotype of Greek pottery, while an Ionic column serves as a pedestal or ashtray.

For their part, the decorative objects include the busts Man and Poppea, together with two large and sensual ‘bronzes’ inspired by the famous Riace sculptures. The vases take the form of male and female heads inspired by Caltagirone ceramics, while a goblet and amphora show decorations of battles and love scenes.
